The dignity with which she wears this finery really comes through. I am surprised to see U.S. quarters and dimes among the necklace coins. Amazing!

Read a bit about the Panamanian history and you'll understand about the quarters and dimes... Btw, the coins are all dated from the 1910's 'till 1930's. (!)
The currency in Panama is still the US Dollar, only they call it "Balboa". It's got the same rate.
A very interesting (and confronting) documentary is "The Panama Deception", you can find it on "youtube' in three parts. It's about the invasion in 1989. The end of the Noriega period...

Oh, deze vind ik zo mooi ... wat een prachtige, trotse meid! Je hebt haar wezen geweldig vastgelegd. Wat ik me nu afvraag is of ze een afdruk krijgt van die foto en zo ja, hoe reageren ze dan?

@Monique: Bedankt Monique! Een afdruk kon ik helaas niet regelen midden in de jungle. (Batterijen opladen voor de camera evnmin...) Ze had wel een emailadres wat ze kan checken als ze weer voor een week naar Panama City gaat voor school. Dus ik heb het haar gemaild. :)

Trying to catch up here on aminus3, not too much time for photos. Anyhow. Good to see you active in your documenting of this unique experience. I wonder if all the painting and jewelry implies that she is of age to marry. She is very young, but these cultures perceive sexuality in ways hard to understand for many of us influenced by Western, Judeo-Christian thought. Nice work.

@Luis A. De Jesus R.: Thanks Luis! No, the painting and jewelry don't implie that she is of age to marry, I've seen children of about 6 years old with the same paintings. It's just decoration and sun protection. But you're right, one time a chief offered me a 13 year old girl to marry. (?!) Don't worry, I'm still single!

@Monique: Toen we uit het dorp vertrokken ging ze met ons mee in de kano richting Panama City, gekleed in spijkerbroek en blouse. De tattoo blijft wel een tijdje zitten voordat die slijt. Bij mij duurde het zo'n 4 maanden voordat de laatste restjes eraf waren; schrobben met een stukje zeep hiep echt niet... :)
